Helping Year 10 Students Understand Their Career Opportunities, and Build Their Interview Confidence

July 25, 2022

Making the transition from education to the world of work can be challenging.

When young people are still at school, it can be hard for them to know what they want to do with their lives, and the routes they need to take to get there.

When they do decide which direction they’d like to take, it’s common for them to find it tough interviewing for jobs, as they don’t feel comfortable or confident in interview situations.

Leicester Education Business Company (LEBC) helps young people prepare for working life.

Set up in 1992, LEBC work with employers, schools and colleges across Leicestershire to help young people get ready for the world of work.

Their mission is to inspire everyone to reach their potential.

LEBC commonly arrange work experience placements for students to help them understand if a certain area of work is right for them. They also have a team of experts that can provide career guidance and advice and help them prepare for situations like interviews.

Everything Branded supported LEBC events to raise awareness of different work opportunities, and build interview confidence

In June, Everything Branded received an email from LEBC asking for support in a series of events that were designed to help Year 10 students build their knowledge and awareness of the career opportunities open to them, and also develop their interview confidence.

An email was sent out to all team members of the Everything Global group to see if anyone was interested in helping out.

We were delighted by the number of responses that came from all areas of the business and got straight back to LEBC confirming the support of the Everything Branded.

Mock Interviews with Muzammil

The mock interview event was held on 20th June, and paired Year 10 students with volunteers from local businesses.

The aim of this event was to build the interview confidence of the students by giving them ‘real world’ experience of an interview environment.

In addition to helping students feel more comfortable in an interview environment, the event also allowed students to receive valuable constructive feedback on their interview performance.

Our Sales Account Manager, Muzammil, was the most natural choice to represent Everything Branded in the mock interviews, as he actually went through a similar process six years ago!

"Going through the mock interview process six years ago was really valuable for me. It was really rewarding being able to support LEBC help other students in the same way that they helped me"

Speed Networking with Claire, Harry, Jake and Jo

There were two speed networking events that were arranged by LEBC – one on the 24th June and the other on the 27th June.

The purpose of the speed networking events was to help the Year 10 students gain knowledge about the wide variety of different jobs and career opportunities that were available to them once they left education.

The students were placed into groups of three and given 5 minutes with each volunteer from a local business. Students were encouraged to ask as many questions as possible about the volunteer’s job and career, before the volunteer had to move on to the next group of students.

First up for the networking event on the 24th was Claire (CSR Manager) and Jo (HR Manager) who helped students understand the opportunities available to them in the branding, marketing, fulfilment, HR and CSR sectors.

For the event on the 27th, Everything Branded were proudly represented by Harry and Jake, who built a comfortable rapport with a lot of the students and helped give them insights into what it’s like to work as a Sales Account Manager in a multi-national organisation.

"Sometimes it’s easy to take your job for granted. But seeing so many of the young people we were talking to be so interested in sales and marketing, it made me realise how lucky I am really. It was great being part of the speed networking day, and I hope the students we spoke to found our insights valuable"
